They help reduce oil pump scavenging inefficiency due to pump misalignment.

They are also used to align the tappet blocks on L76-99 BT models, so that the tappets rotate correctly on the camshaft.

They are sold in packs of 3, allowing you to align 3 holes in the tappet block, place the first screw, and replace each alignment screw with the other mounting screws one by one until the tappet block is fully installed.
