Primary assembly by Correa Belt Drive Open for Harley-Davidson
Share
In this tutorial we will talk about the change of primary transmission by chain bathed in oil with closed stock stock by a “Belt Drive” belt system open.
This system is quite used in the competition, especially with enhanced motors due to its lightness and low inertia, rapid response and ability to transmit a greater motor torque.
All these benefits will be obtained immediately when the installation is carried out, but above all the look of our machine will change, since we pass from the soft and boring primary lid to a wide belt spinning threateningly on the left side of our Harley-Davidson.
Hands to work
We move directly to the emptying the primary school and disassembling the lid of the same, then and following the instructions of the service manual we block the primary chain and loosen the nuts of the pulley and the clutch, allowing its extraction.
IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that the clutch nut is “left” in the model in which we are working, so it is squeezed and loosen up in reverse to the conventional way.
With the primary transmission we can already loosen the screws that hold the internal crankcase that serves as a link between the engine and the transmission, and take it out.
Special tool
At this point we have to extract a cap that is located on the transmission axis and that makes the interior track function for clutch bearing located on the original cover. We need a special tool (they are manufactured by Baker, Jims or Screamin 'Eagle) to take out this cap.
Mounting
We continue with the assembly of the Belt Drive Kit, the first thing we do is present the engine support plate and transmission and make sure that it sets in a "natural" way, that is, easily and without tensions.
Once this point is verified we can already tighten the plate, and the starter engine, following in this case the instructions of the kit and some common sense (important). For the tightening of the starter engine, which we will perform from the right side of the motorcycle, we will use a long “Allen” key with prolongation and thus avoid having to disassemble the oil tank.
Once with the plate or “interface” in its place we can already present the set of pulleys and strap, again we verify that the pieces settle naturally without stress.
We tighten the screws that hold the pulley to the crankshaft axis and the clutch on the transmission axis. First we put a couple of drops of High strength red loctive fijators And then we apply the specified tightening with the dynamometric key.
We get the clutch discs and enter them in alternate order, starting with a friction disc, then a steel disc, another friction and so on until we reach the lid.
You have to verify that all discs enter gently, without excessive friction. In case of important rubbing we can file the profile of problematic discs a bit.
Following the instructions of the kit we install the clutch spring and perform the recommended tightening and adjustment by the manufacturer.
Turn it
At this point we can start the engine and verify that everything works properly, with soft movement and without strange noises and that the belt aligned and completely parallel to the engine and transmission. Much beware of not putting your fingers in the belt, and remember to wear adequate ocular protection.
We only have to install the protective tapas, using a bit of Blue Locite Medium Resistance.
These tapas in addition to providing a very beautiful finish prevent us from catching our foot when the engine is in operation, although we should never lower our guard, I know cases of jacket sleeves, wallet chains and pants edges hooked in full march, with the consequent scare.
Everything ready
Now we can perform a test return with our brand new Belt Drive, we will notice that the acceleration is more direct, the motorcycle weighs a little less and we no longer have to worry again about the oil level of the primary box. All advantages ...

La palanca de las marchas conserva su ubicación original (en este caso concreto son mandos avanzados).
Y la palanca de las marchas??
