How to remap your Harley with your mobile phone: Fuelpak FP3

In previous articles There has already been talk about the need to adjust the carburation or injection of a motorcycle if leakage, filter, or any element that changes the amount of air entering or exiting an engine is changed.
When performing this task on an injection bike the process would be:

1. Connect an interface to communicate with the motorcycle's ECM
2. Download a pre-programmed map based on engine characteristics
3. Adjust and refine the map based on our needs

Just for experts?
Traditionally the first 2 points have always been easy to solve (in fact it is the only thing that is done in some "professional" environments), but the adjustment and tuning part requires personnel with advanced training, real-time data collection systems and plenty of time to test, all of which significantly increasing the correct installation.

Luckily more and more manufacturers of switchboard reprogramming devices are offering "autotune" software, whereby it is possible to quickly, easily and effectively perform acceptable complete tuning.

Squeezing technology
Vance & Hines technicians have leveraged their competitive expertise to develop an automatic remapping software for Harley-Davidson that uses a small and powerful multi-tasking touch computer with a "telemetry" system using built-in GPS location and accelerometer: our smartphone.
Indeed, by making the most of the mobile phone features (I don't mean Wassapp) we can make real-time data recordings, measurements of different parameters and map fixes on the switchboard.

FP3
The device in question is called Fuelpak FP3, and consists of a Bluetooth interface that plugs directly into the bike's data connector, receiving communications and power at the same time.

Once the interface is connected, we only have to download the software directly from the Play Store (for Android devices) or App Store (for Apple devices).

If we want to work more comfortably we can also install a handlebar holder for our specific phone model, which will allow us to have all the data of the sensors in real time (speed, temperature, RPM...)

Configuration
After installing the program we enter it and then put the contact of the bike in "On" (it is not necessary to start it. Important: Verify that the "Run/Off" handlebar button is in "Run" position). After this step we have to match our terminal with the FP3 via Bluetooth and from there we can communicate with the bike.

On the first screen we can see the main features of the software:

• Map Lookup: Remapping and tuning area.
• Read Trouble Codes: From here we can read the engine failure codes and delete them.
• View Sensor Data: Configurable display to see the different parameters of the sensors in real time.

Practical case
Let's go over the steps to follow when making a remap and "autotune":
• We enter Map Lookup and select the most suitable map depending on the escpes, filter, etc. that equips our model.

• We program the map ("reflash").

• Once programmed a new option will appear in the menu: Autotune; Walked.

• We select our map, and we will take a ride with the bike, while the program records data (we will see how some boxes are filled depending on the areas (RPM and engine load) that we pass through.

• Below we instruct the program to save and reprogram the new calibration ("apply learned values") and we have finished: We have a custom calibration for our motorcycle.

Conclusion
It is advisable to repeat the Autotune process several times and under different driving circumstances so that the maximum cells are filled, which will indicate that the map has been autocorrected in greater percentage, providing even more driving smoothness, more fuel economy and greater acceleration and power.
