The Short Hitachi Type Starter Motors are used on 1982 THRU 1988 Models. FROM 1973 THRU 1982 The FL Models Were Equipped With Prestolite Type Starter Motors and FX Models With Hitachi Type Ones. Note: Hitachi and Prestolite Starter Motors Nor Replacement Parts are interchangable, always check the type of starter engine used on your Harley Before Ordering.hitachi Starters Are 80mm in diameter and have 145mm Housing Length. Prestolite Starters are 70mm in diameter and have at 173mm Housing Length.
