Harley-Davidson Inc. is building a new plant in Thailand, company executives have confirmed to the press.
The new plant will be located in Rayong Province, Thailand, southeast of Bangkok, to serve the Southeast Asian market.
"This has nothing to do with taking jobs out of the United States," Marc McAllister, managing director of international sales for Singapore-based Harley-Davidson, told the New York Times. "This is about growing our business in Asia."
The United Steelworkers (USW) union, which represents workers at Harley plants in Wisconsin and Missouri, is not at all happy and criticizes the decision, saying it "jeopardizes one of America's few authentic brands."
Although U.S. plants are cutting jobs, the Motor Company has been growing internationally by 2.3%. ( Source: Milwaukee Business Journal )

The brand currently has assembly plants in Brazil and India. This is another challenge of internationalization, a necessary condition for survival in this globalized world. The key is to grow without losing the brand's essence and to continue offering a truly premium product, not simply a marketing ploy. It's about maintaining high standards in the manufacturing and assembly processes, while simultaneously combining exhaustive quality control. Will Harley rise to the challenge?
