Controlling the revolutions: Update your Harley's account-kilometers
Share
It is an obvious fact that for motorcycle owners custom the ability to “squeeze” the engine constantly to obtain maximum benefits is not a priority. This, together with the characteristic minimalism of the vehicles in this segment, causes many models not to account for turns or RPM accountant (revolutions per minute).
Simplifying the information
Is it necessary to know this data to enjoy the motorcycle? It is really not an essential factor, since we can guide ourselves with the vibrations and the behavior of the engine, feeling the man-machine bond that makes motorcycles so special about other vehicles.
Now, already put to simplify, applying the same logic we also do not need the speedometer, being able to feel the air pressure on our body and adapting our conduction to the circumstances, not to the established limits. In fact, many competition motorcycles do not have a speedometer, since for its mission the engine rotation speed is more important than the linear speed of the vehicle.
If we know the RPM we know when it is the optimal time to change the march and not force it, we improve the efficiency in the management of the accelerator and we can even detect problems or failures prematurely, such as the wear of the clutch discs. Obviously for a “street” motorcycle we imperatively need kilometers, but what if we could have everything in a single device?
Options
If we finally decide that we want to add an account-revolutions to our motorcycle we will have several options depending on the year and model, analog or electronic devices, universal or specific, and we can even see this information on our mobile phone.
In this specific case we have decided to install an integrated Harley-Davidson RPM account in a Road King for several reasons:
Replace directly to the original clock, keeping the classic motorcycle look.
Total compatibility with original electronic systems, without the need for extra cables or sensors.
Ease and speed of installation, you can do it yourself without special tools.
Totally configurable display, we can select if we want to see the gear gear, the amount of fuel, the time ... and we can assign different colors to each part of the sphere.
Data transvase
The first thing we have to do before dismantling the original counter is to write down the kilometers of the vehicle, for this we will press on the Reset button and score the figure.
Then we will locate the vehicle data connector (consult its location in your motorcycle workshop manual), through this connector we get direct access to the data saved in the ECM or switchboard.
We will enter the connector one end of the cable supplied with the new kit
and the other end we will connect to the new accountckilometers.
After a few seconds and the total counter from the memory of the ECM to the new device will be transferred automatically, and on its screen we can read “OK” when the process is completed.
In this way we will not lose the total accumulated kilometers, very important especially for legal and practical issues when controlling maintenance reviews. We can already discard the data cable and set up our new counter.
Disassembly and replacement
To continue, you have to disconnect the main or maxi-fusable fuse located on the side of the motorcycle.
We continue, removing the seat and releasing the console,
which allows us access to the rear of the accountckilometers.
Pressing gently on the eyelashes that hold it we will take out the retention hoop and will be released into accounting, which we will replace with the new following the reverse order of the disassembly.
Screen settings
With the new device in its place we will connect the main fuse again and start the engine, checking that the needle of our brand new counts turns works properly and that the total kilometers coincide with those of the previous one.
At this point we just have to select among the more than 600 colors available to customize the display screen.
Generally choosing the aesthetic combination that we like the most is the longest part of the assembly process ...
